Students from the Manila Central University College of Dentistry participated in an international short study program at Niigata University, gaining valuable academic and cultural experiences that enhanced their knowledge in dentistry and global healthcare practices.
The program provided a comprehensive learning experience through a combination of lectures, laboratory work, and clinical exposure. Students were introduced to advanced topics such as artificial intelligence in diagnostics, tissue engineering, dysphagia management, pulp biology, cariology, and digital dentistry. Hands-on activities and simulations further strengthened their clinical reasoning and technical skills.
Throughout the program, students engaged in a wide range of academic and clinical activities. These included attending lectures on oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, developmental biology, pharmacology, and oral physiology, as well as participating in laboratory sessions on tissue engineering, bio-prosthodontics, and CAD/CAM applications. They also took part in dysphagia management stations, ultrasound practice, and diagnostic exercises that integrated clinical and laboratory work.
Clinical exposure was a key component of the experience, with students observing procedures in operating rooms and dental clinics, including prosthodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and oral pathology. These opportunities allowed them to witness real-world applications of dental concepts, understand patient care processes, and appreciate teamwork in a clinical setting.
Beyond academics, the program also emphasized cultural immersion. Students explored local destinations such as Hyoko Lake, Teradomari Fish Market, Kakudahama, Yahiko Shrine, and the Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel, while also experiencing a ski trip and visiting local commercial areas. These activities provided meaningful exposure to Japanese culture, nature, and daily life, allowing students to develop a broader global perspective.
Representing the MCU College of Dentistry in the program were Natalie Cate M. Corres and Justine V. Lituan, who gained hands-on exposure to both academic and cultural aspects of the experience. Their participation reflects the university’s continued commitment to providing international opportunities that strengthen both academic learning and professional development.
Through initiatives like this, the MCU College of Dentistry continues to prepare students to become globally competent dental professionals equipped for the evolving demands of the field.
