Manila Central University (MCU) celebrated its 120th founding anniversary on December 4, 2024, with the theme “Creating the Future Today.” The event featured the 57th Filemon D. Tanchoco Memorial Lecture, honoring MCU founder Atty. Filemon D. Tanchoco Sr., and the first Filemon D. Tanchoco (FDT) Scientific Discoverer Award Ceremony.
This year’s memorial lecture highlighted groundbreaking research and innovation, with the team behind the “SafeWaTrS” Mobile Water Disinfection System: Engr. Reynaldo L. Esguerra, Engr. Prima Joy F. Margarito, Engr. Rochelle L. Retamar, Engr. Dante C. Vergara, Engr. Rodelma D. Perez, Engr. Engel Ryan G. Ibarra, and Mr. Reymundo K. Adan. SafeWaTrS is a solar-powered, mobile water treatment system capable of producing 200 liters of potable water per hour, providing a critical solution for clean water access during disasters and in remote areas.
At the award ceremony, the team was honored as the first recipients of the prestigious Filemon D. Tanchoco Scientific Discoverer Award. They received a monetary reward, a medallion bearing the image of Atty. Filemon D. Tanchoco Sr., and Certificates of Recognition.
“Today signifies a momentous occasion—the inaugural Filemon D. Tanchoco Sr. Scientific Discoverer Award,” said Dr. Gaio Tanchoco Gonzalez, Trustee of the FDT Trust Board. “This award recognizes exceptional accomplishments and pays homage to Atty. Tanchoco’s vision of utilizing science and education to enhance the welfare of humanity.”
As MCU looks to the future, it remains committed to driving innovation, excellence, and empowering the next generation of leaders to create a better world.
