Computer Studies now a College

The Department of Computer Studies (DCS) headed by Mr. Avonn Nova became the College of Computer Studies (CCS) last June 2.

Several factors were considered prior to the authorization as a college. Among these were that 80% of the DCS faculty members must have a master’s degree. Another consideration is that the graduates the department produce must acquire jobs that are in connection with the course they finished.

As a step to comply with its college status, the Computer Studies will soon offer ladderized programs in BS Computer Science and BS Information Technology courses. Computer Studies will also offer a short course on Systems Applications Products in Data Processing (SAP). Computer Science is now pursuing for Level 1 accreditation so that it will be recognized as a provider of quality education.

Code Red in MCU

The MCU – University Student Council (USC) held a successful bloodletting project entitled “Code Red” on September 12 up to 14 at the Centennial Gym Function Room. The event was conducted with the help of the MCU – Red Cross Youth Council and Nightingale Missions.

“The project was conducted to give MCU students, faculty and employees a chance to help the less fortunate,” USC Special Projects Coordinator Arjay Abichuela said. “Marami ang nag-donate (ng blood) kaya marami tayong matutulungan.”

Among those who gave blood were Dr. Renato Tanchoco Jr., Assistant Vice President for Administrative Affairs, and USC President Lizelle Vargas. Representatives from the MCU-FDTMF, Philippine Children’s Medical Center, and the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) attended the event. Photo shows Dr. Renato Tanchoco Jr. donating blood.

Entrepreneurial seminar held

Mr. Marlo Sanchez, a business books author, professor and media practitioner was the guest speaker during the “Think Global: Be an Entrepreneur” seminar held at the Tanchoco Auditorium last August 14. Sanchez gave pointers on setting up businesses, discussed global trends and expounded opportunities for everyone. The College of Business Administration and Department of Computer Studies organized the well-attended event.

Faculty development highlighted

“Enhance and maintain the benefits of faculty members, improve teaching skills, and unite the teachers towards one goal that is to achieve academic excellence,” Mr. Alexander Gonzales, new Faculty Association of Manila Central University (FAMCU) president said when asked on the thrusts of the faculty association.

The FAMCU president gave emphasis on faculty development programs and said faculty development will ultimately benefit the students.

“Lahat ng gagawin for the development ng faculty ay mapupunta sa students. When we improve the faculty (skills), their knowledge and teaching skills will be upgraded and this will benefit the students,” he said.

Mr. Gonzales will work for a harmonious relation with the MCU Administration. He says communication is the key and that there is a proper forum to discuss concerns.

Gawad Kalinga summit held

Manila Central University hosted Gawad Kalinga (GK) Isang Milyong Bayani Summit last August 4 at the Tanchoco Hall with GK Executive Director Tony Meloto as main speaker.

Mr. Meloto said the GK chapter in MCU is an opportunity to build “partnerships with institutions known for excellence, credibility and integrity such as MCU”. The participants in the audience agreed that the mission of GK is consistent with the mission of MCU.

The MCU-GK 2-year development plan was presented. Among the achievements of MCU-GK are the adoption of one house in a community and several dental and medical missions. The MCU chapter plans to put up a clinic and conduct educational activities for the community members and eventually build a community.

The event was attended by Dr. Renato C. Tanchoco, Assistant Vice President for Administrative Affairs and Mr. Gaio T. Gonzalez representing the Tanchoco family, Dr. Lutgarda C.
